Pipeline Big Wave Beaches
Banzai Pipeline

Banzai Pipeline is a spectator's dream and a surfer's Nirvana or nightmare, depending upon the ride. Set up like a theater, Pipeline offers surfers the ultimate ride - the tube - while presenting I-MAX-type action for spectators - ultimate rides and ultimate wipeouts!

A lethal combination of super shallow reef and thumping winter swell result in a harrowing, hollow ride that crashes with bone-crunching force. Split-second reactions are a pre-requisite to surfing this place, along with years of surfing experience, cutting-edge equipment, and nerves of steel. Surfer's have just seconds to get themselves into position as deep-water swells “jack” skyward and pitch over the barely submerged reef. The rider has a split-second to get to his feet before hurtling vertically downward, then turning hard before the wave throws clean over the top of him, encapsulating him in the hollow, “pipeline” of a wave. Little wonder, on average, Pipeline claims a life every other year. It is responsible for injuries almost every day it is ridden on a large swell.

Pipeline is home to the world's longest running and most prestigious professional surfing event: The Rip Curl Pro Pipeline Masters, as well as a relatively new event that is rapidly gaining ground, The Monster Energy Pipeline Pro. Both events are held during the peak period for large swells and offer spectators an energizing experience! On big days at Pipeline, you really can feel the sand rumble beneath your feet as thick swells explode audibly on the reef.

Did you know?
Just to the left of the main break is a spot called Pipeline Rocks. This is where the opening wave sequence for Hawaii 5-0 was shot.
